Black Supermen

420502_397525886940350_980832982_nThe Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture hosted the Black Comic Book Festival this past Saturday (January 12) and it was packed!  The festival was a celebration of black superheroes and featured a “creators alley” of works by indie comic creators from around the country and a pop-up exhibition of “Black Kirby” – a visual homage to legendary comic book artist Jack Kirby. The festival also included panel discussions and a screening of Jonathan Gayles’ White Scripts And Black Supermen: Black Masculinities In Comic Books.  The documentary looks back at the earliest appearances black comic book heroes like Lobo, Black Panther, Falcon, Green Lantern John Stewart, Power Man, Black Lightning and Tyroc.  The commentary by academics and comic creators throughout was thought provoking and entertaining.  Check out the trailer for the documentary here:
